As the cradle of China’s modern medicine and integrated Chinese-Western medicine, Shanghai holds unparalleled historical importance in Chinese healthcare. By 1949 when the People’s Republic was founded, nearly half of China’s modern medical resources were concentrated in Shanghai, presenting a unique cosmopolitan landscape - hospitals with missionary origins coexisted with institutions established by Chinese pioneers and various foreign communities. Remarkably, over 50% of the nation’s top-tier medical professors were then based in Shanghai. This concentration of expertise enabled Shanghai to play a pivotal role in establishing over a dozen medical colleges across China during subsequent decades. Many of these Shanghai-established institutions(Such as Wuhan Tongji Medical University, Huaqiao University, Chongqing Medical Univeristy, Anhui Medical University, Kunming Medical Univeristy, Hainan Medical University, Bengbu Medical University, Ningxia Medical University), as well as Beijing-based healthcare departments like Beijing Hospital, have evolved into China’s most prestigious medical schools today. Such extraordinary historical accumulation cemented Shanghai’s distinctive status in Chinese medical advancement, where international medical heritage blended with indigenous innovation, creating enduring impacts that continue to shape China’s healthcare system and medical education.
