Ruijin Hospital, founded in 1907 and formerly known as Guangci Hospital, is a general hospital that combines clinical practice, education and research three-in-one, with a rating of “Grade 3, Class A” and a profound history of more than 100 years. The hospital has a land area of 120,000 square meters, among which, buildings cover 300,000 square meters and green field, 40,000 square meters. It has 1,693 approved beds (in fact more than 2,100 open beds), and employs 4,212 people, including 1,224 physicians. The hospital boasts a number of medical experts with high reputation both at home and abroad, including academicians Zhu CHEN and Guoqiang CHEN of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and academicians Zhenyi WANG, Saijuan CHEN and Guang NING of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The hospital has a total of 46 clinical disciplines and 9 public health disciplines. Currently, it is home to 4 national key disciplines approved by Ministry of Education (hematology, endocrine and metabolic disease, cardiovascular medicine, and neurology), 22 national key clinical specialties and 1 national key clinical laboratory (Key Laboratory of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases). The hospital is a national demonstration unit of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicines. In addition, it has 3 municipal research institutes with corporate capacity (Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, Shanghai Institute of Hypertension, and Shanghai Institute of Endocrine and Metabolic Disease), 3 municipal research institutes (Shanghai Institute of Burn, Shanghai Institute of Hematology, and Shanghai Institute of Digestive Surgery), 1 national key laboratory approved by Ministry of Science and Technology (Key Laboratory of Medical Genomics), and 1 key laboratory approved by Ministry of Education (Key Laboratory for Functional Genomics and Disease-related Genomics).

In the 1950s, Ruijin Hospital successfully treated and cured a severely burnt ironworker named Caikang QIU, who had a total body surface area (TBSA) burnt of 89.3%. Before that, the international medical community believed that “patients with a TBSA burnt of over 80% are not curable.” This case had successfully broken through assumed limit and won fame for the hospital both at home and abroad. In the 1990s, significant progress had been achieved in leukemia molecular biology and clinical practice, making the “Shanghai Regimen” of acute promyelocytic leukemia an internationally recognized standard of care.

Setting previous achievements as examples and taking diagnosis and treatment of difficult and critical diseases as responsibilities, Ruijin Hospital constantly challenges established technical limits, actively practices cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, makes full use of its comprehensive medical services, and implements multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary joint consultation systems. The hospital enjoys a full range of disciplines, strong technical expertise, outstanding featured specialties, and world-advanced medical equipment. Meanwhile, it has undertaken the clinical research and development of China’s first set of independently developed proton therapy equipment, which, upon its completion, will become a nationally top-notch modern proton therapy center with completely independent intellectual property rights.

Ruijin Hospital is the largest clinical teaching base of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Ruijin Clinical School of Medicine currently opens 2 majors (clinical medicine and medical laboratory), and has 41 teaching and research sections (groups). It is an approved national clinical teaching and training demonstration base, and also one of the largest national standardized residency training bases and standardized specialist training bases in Shanghai. Each year, around 250 residents and 230 specialists are being trained. At the same time, the School owns a nationally most advanced medical simulation center with an area of 3,200 square meters.

Over the past 5 years, the hospital has been entrusted with more than 1,000 programs in total, including national key research and development programs, various ministerial and municipal programs, major special programs for new drug development, programs supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 973 programs and S&T supporting programs supported by Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2018 alone, the hospital had a total of 231 programs funded by all levels.For the first time, it undertook over 100 programs entrusted by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and received a longitudinal grant of RMB 199 million yuan for 118 research programs.
