A Playful History of Surgery

“The forefathers of the profession of surgery were a group of people named Tony. Yes, the very same Tony from the barbershop. The red, white, and blue rotating lamp outside the barbershop symbolizes: white represents gauze, red represents arteries, and blue represents veins. Five hundred years ago, barbershops were the sanctuaries of bloodletting therapy…” Yao Le recounted with wit and humor, transporting the audience through the “past and present” of surgical medicine amidst waves of laughter. “A Playful History of Surgery” not only allowed the audience to learn about significant milestones in surgical medicine, such as the birth of antiseptic surgery, the discovery of penicillin, the invention of antibiotics, the determination of ABO blood types, and the refinement of modern blood transfusion techniques, but also reviewed the continuous progress of modern surgery in China, including the remarkable contributions of medical giants like Qiu Fazu, Qian Yunqing, and Wu Mengchao.

The event was guided by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and co-organized by several institutions, aiming to deepen the Healthy Shanghai Initiative, innovate health science communication models, and highlight the crucial role of medical institutions and professionals in health education. Wang Tong, the planner of “A Playful History of Surgery,” stated that using stand-up comedy to narrate medical history is an innovative attempt, showcasing the development of surgery while expressing deep respect for medical workers. Through this unique event, Shanghai demonstrated its innovative spirit in health science communication and its relentless pursuit of enhancing citizens’ sense of health fulfillment. “A Playful History of Surgery,” with its distinctive format and profound significance, became a special tribute to all medical workers.
