Multiple parties join forces to collectively advance the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.
This community event is a continuation of the outcomes from the “Seminar on Special Documentary and Popular Science Projects for the Prevention and Treatment of Digestive Tract Tumors” held on April 11 at the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission’s Health Promotion Center. The purpose is to promote the widespread understanding of the prevention and treatment of digestive tract tumors and to support the Healthy Shanghai Initiative.
During the seminar on April 11, ShanghaiDoctor.cn” released the public welfare documentary Healthy Shanghai Action 2030: Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Treatment, which was planned, directed, scripted, organized, and filmed by “ShanghaiDoctor.cn” over a span of one and a half years. This documentary is the first in the series of public welfare documentaries on the prevention and treatment of specialized diseases by “ShanghaiDoctor.cn.” During the filming period, the project team successfully overcame various challenges, such as personnel allocation, organizational coordination, and difficulties caused by the pandemic, including the inability of some hospitals and experts to participate due to heavy workloads during the pandemic.

Science Popularization into Communities
To raise awareness among more residents about the prevention of intestinal tumors and to ensure that the various prevention and treatment methods introduced in the documentary benefit a wider audience, ShanghaiDoctor.cn has gradually launched a series of community-based activities. On June 16, the event titled “Healthy Gastrointestinal Tract, Happiness for All” held in Yichuan Subdistrict is one of the “model” activities following the “Symposium on the Documentary and Science Popularization Project for Digestive Tract Tumor Prevention and Treatment.”
As the only tertiary hospital in Putuo District and a century-old renowned institution, the Gastroenterology Department of Tongji Hospital represents the highest level of gastroenterology in Putuo District and the northwestern region of Shanghai. To ensure the professionalism of this “model” activity in Putuo District, Professor Xu Shuchang, Party Secretary of Tongji Hospital and Chief Physician of Gastroenterology, led the initiative. The expert team, headed by Xie Zhuangli, Director of the Publicity Department of Tongji Hospital, and Xiong Guangsu, Chief Physician of the Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, provided medical support for the event. This initiative also serves as an innovative exploration of collaboration between tertiary hospitals and communities, contributing to the advancement of the Healthy Shanghai Action.
Meanwhile, Shen Yuan, Director of the Tumor Department at the Putuo District Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Yu Hao, President of Yichuan Community Health Service Center, along with Vice President Wu Yuxia, introduced and reviewed the long-standing efforts in colorectal cancer prevention and treatment in Putuo District, particularly in Yichuan Community. Experts emphasized that colorectal cancer is a preventable and controllable disease, and it is crucial to enhance disease prevention awareness among community residents. Regular fecal occult blood tests and gastrointestinal endoscopy for residents can play a significant role in prevention. Additionally, gastroesophageal reflux, which is associated with esophageal tumors, can also be effectively prevented and treated early through gastroscopy.

At the event, doctors from Tongji Hospital and the Yichuan Subdistrict Community Health Service Center delivered engaging science popularization lectures tailored to the needs of residents. These lectures aimed to deepen residents’ understanding of the importance of preventing, early detecting, and scientifically treating digestive tract tumors. Additionally, the event offered health consultations, fecal occult blood tests for colorectal cancer screening, and gastrointestinal endoscopy appointments for community residents.
This initiative helped raise awareness among residents about the importance of early diagnosis. Through the implementation of fecal occult blood tests and other diagnostic services, it effectively identified residents’ occult blood conditions and disease risks, providing precise data support for further medical guidance and treatment.
Positive response from the residents
This event was promoted through various channels, including the community health service center, neighborhood committees, community groups, media, and WeChat official accounts. Methods such as distributing informational brochures and putting up posters were used to effectively engage residents of Yichuan Community. The initiative received an enthusiastic response and active participation from the community, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of residents’ awareness of intestinal health. It also played a significant role in widely disseminating scientific knowledge on the prevention and treatment of intestinal tumors, while continuously strengthening residents’ ability to manage their own health.
